Pressing & Forming

Our press forming facilities are extensive and have traditionally been used for making shaped plywood components, mainly in the development of domestic and contract furniture. However, the presses can be used for many different applications.

These include thermo compression moulding of thermoplastics and thermoset composites, and laminating sheet materials such as foams, fabrics, papers and other materials into hybrid panels. Even heat transfer printing is possible for items such as exhibition stands, furniture, sports goods, etc.

Interwood - Heated Platen Press

A single daylight up-stroking hydraulic press exerting a maximum pressure of 120 tonnes over the platen area. It has a large forming area with platen dimensions of 3050mm x 1220mm and with a maximum daylight of 300mm. Both platens on this press are electrically heated and independently adjustable up to 160oC. This press is suitable for creating veneered wood panels and forming large relatively low relief forming from matched die tooling.

Interwood - Large Daylight Cold Press

This is similar to the Heated Platen Press but is configured with a large daylight of 900mm which allows it to accommodate the deepest of formings. Although this is not a heated press, the bottom platen is split and it can operate as a single large area deep draw press, or as two smaller independently operated presses.

This allows two different components to be produced at the same time, or to increase and optimise the forming cycle when employing both platens alternately to produce the same component in higher volumes.

Air Press - Heated Membrane Press

This press has a large forming area of 3000mm x 1450mm. It uses a heat resistant elastic membrane and a vacuum to exert atmospheric pressure via the membrane to the components being formed. A bank of overhead infra-red heaters provide controlled heating of the silicon membrane sheet and the components being made.

The process and configuration of this press simplifies tooling as the elastic membrane conforms to the shape required to compress components for a single sided tool, where normally a two-piece matched die tool would be required. It is suitable for forming, moulding lamination and heat transfer printing of flat, curved and shaped components.

MIKUTHERM – PRE HEATER

This is a pneumatically activated contact heater for pre-heating various substrates such as acrylic, and solid surface materials such as Corian, prior to forming in one of our presses. The heating area is 2100mm x 1100mm and the temperature of each platen is independently controlled up to 200 oC.

Technically, it is not a press, however the weight of the upper platen combined with heat will, for some applications, be sufficient to laminate, and heat transfer print, some flat substrates.
