Prototyping

Metropolitan Works is about both design and production. Design is an iterative process in which a three dimensional model is vital for assessing the effectiveness of a product. Therefore prototyping is a crucial stage in the development of a design.

Facilities

There are several rapid prototyping machines in the Digital Manufacturing Centre which build your 3D CAD file in plaster, nylon, or even metal. The large format laser cutter and the three and five axis CNC routers can be used to machine out components or models, and the 3D scanners can capture ‘real world’ objects, ideal for artists and crafts people to work back from hand built maquettes and products.

Full Prototyping Service

We provide a full prototyping service, building a new design from start to finish from your drawings and direction. The wide range of technologies in the Digital Manufacturing Centre and the extensive Traditional Facilities available at the University enables us to handle most prototyping work in-house.

Sub-Contracting

For jobs which in the main do not involve the use of digital production equipment, we will subcontract to local workshops, whilst still managing the process and suppliers. We are also happy to mix our in-house Bureau Service with outsourced suppliers in the best combination for your business.
